William Hill Review Summary

William Hill is a household British betting brand that has evolved into an internationally renowned online sportsbook and gambling platform. Founded in the UK in 1934, they stand as an iconic sports betting brand and they're one of the most trusted online sportsbooks. For decades, they've been a stalwart on the high street, consistently ranking amongst the top three betting shops, alongside giants like Ladbrokes and Betfred.

You might recognise them from their high-profile sponsorships of sporting events over the years. They've prominently sponsored Box Office boxing, being a notable backer of Matchroom and Anthony Joshua. Additionally, they've been associated with the World Championship darts at Alexandra Palace and various horse racing events.

While they remained largely independent for a significant period, even as others around them folded or merged, they've recently been acquired by 888 Holdings, the same company behind 888 Casinos and Sportsbooks, along with other gambling platforms.

William Hill Review: Our Verdict

Is William Hill Any Good?

Yes, I genuinely like William Hill and frequently use the site for a range of bets. Even though I technically have access to all the betting sites available in the UK, I only stick to a few of them on a regular basis. William Hill is one I'd readily recommend as one of my top choices for sports betting.

For me, it's largely about tradition. I signed up with William Hill about 10 years ago when they were among the few online sportsbooks available in the UK, and I've remained loyal since. It carries a sense of nostalgia for a UK punter like me to bet with a brand that has been consistent for almost a century, having been established in the 1930s.

While they've occasionally been a step behind the newer digital brands, they've made commendable efforts to catch up. They now offer a state-of-the-art product that competes well with most online sportsbooks.

I'll delve deeper into all the nuances in this comprehensive William Hill review, but for those wanting a quick overview here's my summary. I appreciate the consistent offers they roll out, almost daily. Their bet builder is impressively detailed, meaning you can build quite diverse multiples that include things like player stats bets. They offer more markets than some competing sportsbooks, and their mobile site operates seamlessly like an app.

William Hill Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Really well built mobile site
  • Daily deals to enhance betting
  • Boosts and bonuses
  • Great bet builder
Cons
  • Capped bets on boosts
  • Website can be cluttered, use mobile
  • Sometimes behind on Extra race places

William Hill Review: Common Complaints

I had a look around at some other review sites to get a feel for what customers were saying about William Hill and you get a theme from players who have generally lost out on something, so take to a review site to complain. William Hill scored poorly on Trustpilot for example, but it's apparent that people tend to complain when they lose. Here are some of the general complaints that I've picked up on:

Can't withdraw after a big win: Bookies have a duty to collect responsible gambling information from you, so as soon as you win big, they start the process of investigation into your spending. First off this is supposed to protect you. If you win big like hundreds or thousands, you're at risk of blowing that, even though you probably think to withdraw it in most cases. Sportsbooks don't exactly make the process easy, you have to send in identification documents, most of which we don't have to hand these days, but nonetheless, it's something they are supposed to do under the terms of their license. You will get your money - just play the game, satisfy their terms and conditions and you'll get your winnings.

Unrealistic odds on a losing favourite: You backed an odds-on favourite and you put silly money on it thinking it was a dead cert! How this is a common complaint is beyond me. Firstly not all the odds are dictated by William Hill, in most cases they are tracked by other platforms like a betting exchange or trackside prices. So like a stock exchange, William Hill are simply tracking the market price which will be similar to other sites. You think you're being conned into backing a favourite that was destined to lose. The price is a market value across thousands of betting platforms, it's rarely affected by a single site like William Hill.

Spent £X on a slot game and got no bonus rounds: So naturally you can drift off and play casino, such is the nature of an established online betting brand, you have access to a whole world of gambling options. If you do venture into the world of slots, you need to know that most games are networked and it's rarely a game that William Hill will have any control over. You're playing against a system of randomly generated wins linked with thousands of other potential players who can take out a win. The games have to mathematically recoup some of the payouts from time and generally, it can take anything from 50-100 spins to trigger a slot bonus round in my opinion.

Max bet restrictions on promos: This is something I often complain about, having a nice boosted bet with enhanced odds that you like the look of, only to have it restricted to a £5 or £10 maximum. You won't win this one, the bookies are using the promo to get you to look at a football fixture or a race, they're designed to activate interest in an event. In terms of business value, the bookies think they're taking a calculated risk on boosting the price, but they will only calculate on the max bet value, so you're restricted otherwise it stops being profitable for them.

Our William Hill Review of Offers & Promos

William Hill New Customer Offer

Bonus: Deposit and bet £10. Get £30 in Free Bets

18+. Play Safe. From 00:01 on 18.10.2022. £30 bonus. New customers only. Minimum £10 stake on odds of 1/2 (1.5) or greater on sportsbook (excluding Virtual markets). Further terms apply. #ad

MAX BONUS:   £30 WAGERING:   0 MIN DEPOSIT:   £5

This is a pretty standard new customer betting offer from Willaim Hill, it doesn't look all that special on paper, but with no wagering on winnings, you're not going to be given hundreds or thousands in free bets to bet with.

What you are getting is a 300% first deposit bonus to use anywhere in the William Hill sportsbook giving you a fair opportunity to win some cash without wagering.

If you don't know what wagering is, it's a limitation on withdrawing when you win cash with your bonus balance. So if you got a £10 free bet and it came with 3 x Wagering - that means you would have to stake £30 before you could withdraw anything you won with the free bet.

So if you won £40 off that free bet, you would need to place more bets with the winnings before you could withdraw any cash. If you lost the free bet, then you withdrawing ability goes back to normal. When you see big bonus deals over £50, they normaly come with wagering

It's a good offer in my opinion, we're not in the wild west of free bets anymore, where bookies were slinging about £100 deposit bonuses meaning you had to lay down a big deposit first. The bonuses are more responsible these days in terms of your contribution to earn the free bet and this one doesn't have too many restrictions.

Your free bets are given to you as bet credits, which means you will have a cash pot in your account separate from your own deposited cash balance. Once you make a qualifying £10 bet and you trigger the bonus, you are given 3 x free bets that you can stake on 3 bets - it's not a free balance that you can use to place any number of bets totalling £30, it's 3 x £10

William Hill Review: Offer Tips & Advice

To access the welcome bonus, you have to deposit and bet at least £10 in one go. There are no real limitations around that; you bet at least £10 on one bet, and you get the free bets. The free bets have no wagering terms, so if you win you get to keep the cash minus the stake.

The reward goes to a bet bonus balance, and you can select each of the £10 free bets to use in the bet slip when you have chosen some bets to use your free bets on.

You're supposed to use free bets to test out the site. So in my opinion, I would pick three different types of sports bets that you might normally place and have a go. If you're attempting to place minimal-risk bets to get cash off William Hill, you might trigger one of their restrictions in the "lose" bonus terms and conditions. So be reasonable and try not to look like a bonus abuser.

Example: We expect you to be fair when you take part in promotions. We consider certain types of play to be unfair and to breach these terms and conditions. We define these types of play as the following: using 'minimal risk wagering patterns' (that is, a set pattern of bets or stakes that unfairly minimizes risks or opposite betting).

Don't go mad thinking you're gonna walk away with loads of free cash. It's a separate pot, and once you place the bonus on a bet, if it wins, they keep that stake, and you only get back what you won.

Use it to access some stuff you might bet on later. William is a good brand, so don't judge your new account on using the bonus to win cash. If you intend to stick around and play on William Hill, put some bets on the market usually bet on. If I had this bonus again, I'd place a soccer single on a TV game, so I could watch along as it was being played.

I'd probably extend that to a double and then a treble and pick three completely different bets across my free bet credits. Using different markets for each selection means you're not reducing your probability of winning. So if I want to place a treble, I might pick a fixture result as one selection, a goals value for another, and then maybe cards from another game.

If you're new to betting, look at a sport you know something about, or maybe something that's going to be on TV so you can feel the fun while betting on something where you might get some hints from the TV pundits.

William Hill Review: Existing Player Offers

Head over to the promotions page at William Hill, and you'll see there's a healthy selection of bonuses for those who play regularly. You won't see VIP schemes anymore, as these were designed to reward players who lost a lot of cash. In an era where bettors are encouraged to bet responsibly, rewards are more about loyalty and returning to play, rather than loss value. In most cases, you have to opt-in to get promotions.

William Hill splits its bonus offerings into segments like Headline Promotions, where you'll find the most current deals alongside Key Features, which are more like your bet enhancements.

Some Headline Promotions:

  • Scratch of the day: Scratch a virtual lottery card to win daily sports giveaways. This one is a bit gimmicky; it's designed to get you back betting every day. There are free bets like if you scratch 3 x "Bet & Get" that you win most of the time. But the offer encourages you to spend on a set market only that they chose, to get a small free bet.
  • Epic Boosts: From time to time, William Hill selects a headline event to boost with enhanced odds. You'll likely get a televised football bet or horse race boosted. But you'll have a max bet restriction like £5 normally, which is OK if that's your normal stake.
  • Boost one Build #YourOdds: Boost a football single bet of 3 or more selections every day using the William Hill named "Build #YourOdds" bet builder tool. Add a single bet of 3 or more selections on the same match to your betting slip. Select ‘BYO Bet Boost’ and place a maximum stake of £20 to qualify.

William Hill promos are seasonal and often reflect what's happening in the short term. If you log in to the site on a daily basis, you'll get a feel for the daily enhancement that Hill's offers. It's all about getting you to access the daily betting markets rather than punting on longer-term outright bets.

William Hill Betting Review

William Hill Sportsbook Review:

William Hill Football Betting

If the football is on, then it's easily available from the William Hill homepage. They're good at promoting live and up-and-coming events. So if the football is about to start, you'll find the main markets are given a lot of real estate on the site.

There are lots of different ways to access football betting on the site or app. All the main menus feature a football link of some kind and Hill's has also created small sections dedicated to top betting markets, featured football events and then there are enhanced bets on each page enticing you to be on boosted odds, or some risky preselected multiples

There's a handy football link in the popular betting menu on every page. That's the easiest way to get into the core football betting sections of the site. Or if you need a specific match, the search tool works really well offering up popular markets for fixtures when you search a team name or competition.

Football Promotions

From experience, you can access opportunities to earn enhancements and rewards on football bets on a daily basis at William Hill. Head to the promotions page and you'll see a selection of daily bonuses along with their regular offers. Whilst these change very frequently here's an idea of what is often available.

  • Give any game a #Build YourOdds EPIC Boost: Add a single bet of 3 or more selections at odds of 3/1 or bigger to your betting slip. Select ‘EPIC Boost’ and place a maximum stake of £5 with funds from your main account balance. If your bet wins the EPIC Boost winnings will be credited to your account when your bet settles.
  • Boost one Build #YourOdds football single bet of 3 or more selections, every day: Add a single bet of 3 or more selections on the same match to your betting slip. Select ‘BYO Bet Boost’ and place a maximum stake of £20 with funds from your main account balance. If your bet wins, the BYO Bet Boost winnings will be credited to your account when your bet settles.
  • Boost the odds on one football acca of 3 or more selections every day: Add a football acca consisting of 3 or more selections to your betting slip. Select ‘Football Acca Bet Boost’ and place a maximum stake of £20 with funds from your main account balance. If your bet wins, the Football Acca Bet Boost winnings will be credited to your account when your bet settles.

William Hill Sportsbook Review: Free Bets

Free bets are a common theme at William Hill from the welcome bonus for new customers to their loyalty rewards schemes. If you're a regular player, you get access to additional promotions enhancements including a varying range of free bets for existing customers and other promotions.

Free Bet Offers

  • Regular Free Bets: While we can't give you specific details as they change almost daily, we can tell you from experience that William Hill does give out regular and quite random free bets on big events. So if you're a regular player, they do reward loyalty with more free bets than most other bookies
  • Bet & Get Free Bets: They do often have bet and get deals as well which will pop up on their promotions page. that means you deposit the required amount, make a bet and you get the free bet back on a specific betting market or event
  • Stat Attack Free Game: It's a free-to-play weekly football competition (per round), where you pick a match, if you answer 5 questions correctly you win £20 in Bet Builder #YourOdds free bets

William Hill Bet Builder

William Hill's bet builder is one of the best there is in my opinion. I pretty much always use it as a go to build a bet tool. They've adopted their own bet builder brand in Build #YourOdds, an adaption of the #YourOdds bet requesting handle on social media.

I prefer the William Hill bet builder because of the extended stats betting markets that feature in most fixtures. Where most other bookies cover the main markets only, William Hill has more advanced players and team stats-based markets like shots on target, tackles and more.

If you want to fast track your builder bet experience, almost every football fixture on the William Hill website has a selection of prebuilt #YourOdds bets that have been identified as popular combinations that you can copy and bet on in an sintant.

Bet Builder Promotions

William Hill has a good selection of offers ready and waiting for Bet Builders fans.

William Hill Sportsbook Review: In Play & Live Betting

William Hill's live betting and inplay betting offerings are pretty smart, they're up there with the best live betting platforms for me. As an avid sports betting enthusiast and a frequent punter, I think the following highlights make William Hill's live betting experience one of the best

They've Prioritised Live Betting: The live betting section is prominently featured on the site, making it easy to access, which makes following live games and competitions more enjoyable in my opinion. This user-friendly design puts live betting at the forefront of heir site and app, so you feel more immersed in the live action.

An Abundance of Live Betting Markets: When football season is in full swing, William Hill are on it. They offer an extensive array of live betting markets. They have expansive, diverse betting options and it's not just about the final scores; you can still bet on player stats and performances in gameplay.

Scores in Betslips: You can check the scores in your bet slip, which some of Willaim Hill's rivals lack. You get a quick snapshot of the game and you can also link through to the fixture betting page from the bet slip entry.

Easy Access to Inplay Betting: Accessibility is key when it comes to live betting, and William Hill excels. They've made it simple to access inplay betting from the popular menu, which is good for me as it's where I track games that I'm on.

Virtual Match Graphics: The inplay visualise, while no substitute for thew actual football itself is pretty cool. They have a detailed stats panel that always seems to be up to date for the big games.

Live Matches: William Hill show some games live in the inplay module, so you can watch along as you check you bets.

Acca Promotions

William Hill doesn't have any offers currently targeted at the inplay or live betting markets specifically. You can however use any free bet credits earned from the welcome offer as a free bet on inplay bets

William Hill Sportsbook Review: Accas & Coupons

William Hill has a strong acca and coupon betting setup. There's an easy to access coupon section within the football betting category and it's full of all the best betting markets, which are then broken down by league and competition, so you don't have to leave that page. It's a comprehensive coupon section with a wide range of multiple betting markets that I use all the time.

They offer dedicated promotions and offers for multiple bets, particularly accas. This adds some value to the betting experience and does offer something different for those who prefer acca betting like me.

The football coupon section stands out for me because of its diverse range of markets. It's not just about both teams to score or over 1.5 goals. They have over 20 different coupon markets and there are some unique to this section that other coupon pages don't include compared to rival betting sites.

Building accumulators on the William Hill site is straightforward. The layout is easy to navigate, making it simple to select your bets while they load into your bet slip. You'll find singles and potential multiples are very well laid out in the bet slip, making it really clear and obvious which is which.

William Hill Sportsbook Review: Cashout

William Hill's cashout feature has some notable qualities that make it a reliable system in my opinion. One of the standout aspects is its consistent accessibility. It's there when you need it, which is crucial for live betting and managing your bets effectively.

Unlike some other betting sites, I've noticed that William Hill's cashout feature rarely goes down with delays.  While the cashout prices may not be earth-shattering, they are reasonable. I've found value in cashing out on one remaining selection where I've probably picked a riskier final leg to an acca.

And lastly the cashout feature is neatly segmented as a tab in the betslip, making it easy to see all available cashout bets at a glance.

William Hill Sportsbook Review: Odds

William Hill is mid-level competitive on odds. When testing 20 different fixtures there were on most occasions, other bookies offering a better prices. William Hill would argue they offer boosts and enhancements on certain fixtures giving you the facility to increase odds on a variety of bets.

There's always going to be variance in betting markets and you'll find smaller operations willing to risk their margins with higher pricing. It's good to shop about on the bigger bets to make sure you're getting a good price, but that doesn't detract from the fact that William Hill is still a stable and reliable sportsbook. So if you don't mind a few pennies in the pound difference, the variance in odds won't bother you too much.

William Hill Sportsbook Review: Virtual Betting

William Hill offers a modest selection of virtual betting options, primarily focusing on horse racing, football, greyhounds, and some motorsport. They keep it fairly standard without excessive promotion. In my opinion, virtual betting may not be the most responsible way to bet.

Overall, while they do offer a small selection of virtual sports betting, it's a relatively simple offering without too much emphasis on the betting.

Is William Hill Good For Begginers?

For me, William Hill leans more towards the advanced side of betting, so it may not be entirely suitable for beginners. It's not basic! It's worth noting that William Hill's platform is more advanced than many of its smaller rivals, with a wide range of betting markets and features. This might be a bit overwhelming for absolute newcomers.

The sheer amount of information and betting choices on the site can be daunting for beginners. It may take some time to navigate and understand all the nuances of a big betting site.

While I would highly recommend William Hill as a reputable betting site, I would suggest if beginners do join, they should start with smaller bets and get familiar with the platform before committing to more advanced-level betting.

One advantage for newbies is the welcome offer, with free bet credits helping fund exploration of the platform, to hopefully help new customers get a feel for how everything works. It's a useful incentive for those new to Willaim Hill and anyone who might be new to betting as well.

William Hill Design & Mobile Usability Review

William Hill App Review

Over the years, I've found William Hill's mobile website and app to be super reliable and pretty hassle-free as a betting platform. What I particularly like are...

Reliability: I've never experienced any downtime with the mobile website or app. It consistently performs well. It can be slower at times when there's mega-high demand, like a World Cup or Grand National, but these expected anomalies in my opinion.

Mobile Responsiveness: The mobile website is seamlessly responsive and operates much like the app. This means I can enjoy a smooth betting experience on the phone without any significant differences in functionality.

App Performance: The app is not only fast but also packed with all the features available on the website. All the betting markets are there, the bet slip, plus you get access to some rich multimedia video shorts, that play like social videos.

Minimal Notifications:  Lastly I've not been bombarded by notifications. I opt in to notifications, but I don't feel like I'm being spammed compared to other lesser operations.

Review: Design & Usability

William Hill's design stays true to its nostalgic and recognisable branding, keeping up with its household name status as a world-renowned British bookie. Over the years, they've made significant improvements to their platform. It was a little ugly back in the day, and they were a little slow in redesigning the site as design preferences changed. But now it's modern and very aesthetic.

In my opinion, the website feels comfortable to use. It's laid out in a tiered structure, allowing users to navigate through categories and down to betting markets seamlessly with tabs and accordion-style drop-downs which are popular nowadays. This layer-by-layer approach makes it easy to find and place bets.

One notable aspect for me is the clear separation between the sportsbook and other gaming options like the casino, slots, and bingo. This division minimises interference and ensures a focused sports betting experience for betting fanatics. Overall, William Hill offers a well-designed and user-friendly platform that caters to both its legacy users and advanced newcomers to their site.

William Hill Banking Review

Review: Banking

Having explored the banking options at William Hill, a few things stood out to me:

Balanced Choices: Unlike some platforms that have an overwhelming list of banking methods, William Hill offers a selective yet trusted range. This provides assurance without seeming desperate to accommodate every possible method.

Traditional Methods: They provide secure options for those who prefer classic methods, such as debit card transactions and bank transfers. This simplicity caters to many who might not be tech-savvy or just prefer tried-and-true methods.

E-wallets Available: In terms of modern e-wallet options, they've integrated both PayPal and Paysafecard. This addition widens the scope for users who like the convenience and speed of e-wallets.

Unique Top-Up Card: An interesting feature is their in-shop top-up card Willaim Hill CashDirect, which can be managed directly in stores. It's a handy option for those who might want a more face-to-face option for their online betting funds.

Review: Depositing

The depositing process is proper quick. Most deposits appear in your account almost instantly, debit cards and eWallets a pretty much instant and reflect in your bank balance as well with modern faster payments.

Their low minimum deposit threshold is commendable. It’s clear they're aiming for accessibility, allowing users to start small and avoid reckless spending.

While the number of depositing methods isn’t vast, this limitation might hint at a prioritisation of security. It seems they’d rather offer a few trusted methods than too many potentially less-secure ones.

One notable omission is the lack of cryptocurrency options. Given the growing popularity of digital currencies, this is somewhat surprising, but to be expected.

Review: Withdrawals

Bets are settled quickly unless you're placing intricate multiples. So upon winning, most withdrawals, when directed back to the initial banking method, are processed almost instantly.

The low minimum withdrawal amounts across the majority of options indicate a level of flexibility for users, catering to both small and large bettors.

Review: Cryptocurrency

Presently, William Hill only supports fiat payment processing, meaning there are no cryptocurrency banking options.

William Hill Support & Customer Service Review

Review: Customer Support

William Hills support isn't exactly market-leading compared to rival betting sites. I wasn't blown away by the features.

Live Chat: The presence of a live chat is certainly a positive. It’s reasonably responsive, making real-time assistance accessible.

FAQ Shortcomings: Their FAQ section, while present, leaves much to be desired. It's not particularly user-friendly and lacks detailed responses to common queries.

Limited Direct Support: Outside of the live chat, finding other direct methods of support was challenging, which may leave some users feeling a bit confused over how to actually get in touch if live chat is offline which can happen with dynamic support services.

Feedback Hidden: If you find an FAQ unhelpful, there's an option to raise a question. However, this feature isn't immediately evident and could benefit from better signposting.

William Hill Review FAQs

  • Who was William Hill the bookmaker?

Born in Birmingham, William Hill left school at the age of twelve and while working in a factory in Birmingham he started collecting illegal bets from local people on his motorcycle. In 1919, Hill joined the Royal Irish Constabulary as a driver while underage and was stationed in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland. He moved to London in 1929 where he started taking bets on greyhounds before opening an illicit gambling den in Jermyn Street in 1934. He exploited a loophole which allowed credit or postal betting but not cash. In 1944 he produced the first fixed-odds football coupon. He opened his first betting shop in 1966.
