Anytime Scorer in Betting

Summary: Anytime scorer is a type of single bet that you can place online with a sportsbook or in a betting shop using a bet slip or a coupon. It's also the collective name for the betting market. It refers to the type of bet where you pick a player to score at any point in the normal time. It's common in low scoring games like football and rugby where the number of scorers is low compared to the number of players in the game.

What does anytime scorer mean?

Anytime scorer in betting is a type of bet that allows you to place a single bet on a player scoring a goal at any point during a match. It's also the name of the betting market. By that I mean in some cases the betting market and the bet are not one in the same thing. The full time result market for example has 3 different bets.

In the anytime scorer bet market, all players who participate in the game are considered "runners", (runners is a traditional term in betting for participants) and you can select of any of them to score at any time in the game. For the bet to settle as a win that player must score a goal within the full 90mins (+injury time)

  • Its 90mins only (+Injury time)
  • Extra-time in cup games does not count
  • Some bookies void your bet if the player does not start
  • BUT some bookies keep the bet active if the player is subbed on
  • The scorer must be official scorer as per the data supplier (Opta in many cases)

Anytime scorer example

If you place a bet on Haaland to be an Anytime Scorer in a match between Manchester City and Chelsea, you will win if Haaland scores a goal at any point during the 90 minutes of the game, including injury time. However, if Haaland doesn't score a goal during the match, your bet will be considered a losing bet.

It's important to note that if a match is not completed, any selections taken from that match will be considered non-runners. This means that if the match between Manchester City and Chelsea is abandoned for any reason, any bets placed on the Anytime Scorer market will be considered void.

Do own goals count as anytime scorer?

No own goals do not count towards the settlement of bets in the Anytime Scorer market. So, if Haaland scores an own goal during the match, your bet on him as an Anytime Scorer will still be considered a losing bet if he doesn't score a match goal. Or if Haaland shoots and it takes a wicked deflection off the defender, to the point that it's recorded as an official own goal to that defender, then Haaland is not credited with the goal and it's not an anytime goalscorer.

Why is anytime scorer only 90mins?

The anytime scorer bet only applies to the 90 minutes of the match (plus injury time), because this is the standard length of a football match. It is common for betting markets to be settled based on the result at the end of the standard match time, as opposed to extra time or penalty shootouts, which are considered as separate events.

Additionally, the anytime scorer bet is settled based on a player scoring a goal within the standard match time, rather than across the entire duration of the match, to ensure that the outcome is not influenced by any subsequent events or circumstances.

This means the bookies are pricing the game based on normal circumstances each time. Matches are not fixed at 120 minutes, so its difficult to price odds based on events that may or may not happen. Bookies do offer bets outside of 90 mins, but standard markets are always fixed to 90 minutes.

Can anytime scorer be used in bet builders?

Anytime scorer bets can be combined with other types of bets in a bet builder. For example, you could combine an anytime scorer bet with a match result bet to create a multiple bet.

Here's an example:

Let's say you want to bet on Manchester United vs Chelsea. You believe that Manchester United will win and that Bruno Fernandes will score at any time during the match. You could combine these two bets in a bet builder as follows:

  • Select Manchester United to win
  • Select Bruno Fernandes to score at any time during the match

This creates a multiple bet, with both selections needing to be correct for you to win. If Manchester United wins and Bruno Fernandes scores at any time during the match, you win the bet.

What happens if the selection doesn't play?

The bet is voided if the player didn't start the game and that's referred to as a non-runner. Some of the top bookies like Bet365 will void the bet if they don't start and return your stake morally within the first few minutes of the game.

That does present an issue if your player comes on as a sub and scores. In our opinion, that's rare so it's better in the long run to have that refund. Some bookies chose not to void the bet and will take your bet, even if that player comes on for 10 minutes near the end of the game.
